2020 C. Calvin Smith-Wali R. Kharif Book Award Awarded to Dr. Bertis D. English

The C. Calvin Smith -Wali R. Kharif Book Award is named for the late C. Calvin Smith (1943-2009) and Wali R. Kharif (1950-).  It recognizes the most distinguished scholarly book on African American Studies published in the calendar year preceding the SCAASI Annual Conference.  The book may focus on any of the interdisciplinary subject areas addressed by SCAASI but must relate to African American Studies.  Eligibility is open only to books authored by SCAASI members.   Anthologies, encyclopedias and edited works are not considered.  The award recipient receives a plaque and $300 honorarium. Tribute to Dr. Alton Hornsby

Background: Growing up in the south Alton Hornsby developed a strong love of history and southern culture. Seeing multiple forms of inequality he became particularly interested in the historical plight of African Americans in the United States.  Alton Hornsby Jr. received a Bachelors degree in History from Morehouse College in Atlanta Georgia. From there he went on to earn his M.A. and Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas in Austin. Dr. Hornsby worked as faculty in the Morehouse History Department for 42 years, 30 of which he served as department chair.  He was very active on campus and demonstrated…

Passing the Torch

In 2017 we saw the passing of the torch as Dr. Jones the executive secretary retired. Dr Jones was one of the founding members of the organization and he was instrumental in setting up the first convention and subsequently served as executive secretary for the past 40 years. He was instrumental in maintaining the organization in good and lean years.  The membership recognizes his life long contribution and will recognize him at the 2019 convention.
