SCAASI NEWS & EVENTS

Tribute to Dr. Alton Hornsby Jr.  Growing up in the South, Hornsby developed a strong love of history and southern culture. Seeing multiple forms of inequality, he became particularly interested in the historical plight of African Americans in the United States. In 1961, Hornsby earned an undergraduate degree in history from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. From there he went on to earn his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas in Austin.

Awards

The C. Calvin Smith Book Award recognizes the most distinguished scholarly volume on African American Studies published in the calendar year preceding the SCAASI annual conference. The text can focus on any of the interdisciplinary subject areas addressed by SCAASI but must relate to African American Studies.

SCAASI prides itself on recognizing excellence and professional accomplishments. Each year, the organization celebrates the achievements of its members and students.

Dr. Howard Jones

Retired as executive secretary of the organization. For over 40 years Dr. Jones was a driving force in the organization and we look forward to his continued guidance and leadership. His commitment to service helped build a family of scholars dedicated to research and the preservation of African American history and culture.

“Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”

― African Proverb

Passing the Torch

In 2017, we saw the passing of the torch as Executive Secretary Howard Jones retired. Dr. Jones, a founding member of the organization, was instrumental in setting up the first convention and subsequently served as executive secretary for 40 years. The membership recognizes his lifelong contribution.
