The Southern Conference on African American Studies, Inc. (SCAASI)

Mourns the Passing of Founder Dr. Howard Jones (1944–2026)

It is with profound sadness that the Southern Conference on African American Studies, Inc. (SCAASI) announces the passing of our founder, mentor, and devoted servant-leader, Dr. Howard Jones, who transitioned in 2026 at the age of 82.

Dr. Jones was one of the visionary founding members of SCAASI and played an instrumental role in establishing the organization that has served scholars, educators, students, and communities throughout the South and beyond for more than four decades. His leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to African American studies helped shape SCAASI into the respected organization it is today.

As Executive Secretary, Dr. Jones faithfully served the organization for approximately 40 years. He was instrumental in organizing SCAASI’s first conference and remained a steadfast presence through both prosperous and challenging times. His commitment to preserving the organization’s mission, fostering scholarship, and building community ensured SCAASI’s continued growth and success across generations.

In 2017, SCAASI witnessed a significant moment in its history as Dr. Jones officially passed the torch and retired from his role as Executive Secretary. His retirement marked the end of an era of dedicated service and visionary leadership. Following his retirement, the organization undertook an important period of reflection and planning to examine its structure and chart a course for the future. During this transition, Dr. Tonya Thames Taylor served as Interim Executive Secretary in 2017 and successfully coordinated the 2018 conference in Mississippi, helping to continue the strong foundation Dr. Jones had built.

Throughout his life, Dr. Jones remained committed to advancing scholarship, education, and the study of African American history and culture. His contributions extended far beyond administrative leadership. He inspired colleagues, mentored emerging scholars, and championed opportunities for meaningful academic dialogue and community engagement.

The members of SCAASI recognize and celebrate Dr. Jones’s lifelong contributions to the organization. His vision, perseverance, and dedication have left an enduring legacy that will continue to guide and inspire future generations.

Funeral services for Dr. Howard Jones will be held at 11:00 AM on June 27, 2026, at Progressive New Hope Baptist Church, located at 3106 Paige Street, Houston, Texas.

As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a remarkable life of service, leadership, and scholarship. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, former students, and all who were touched by his work and generosity.

Dr. Howard Jones’s legacy lives on through the organization he helped create, the countless individuals he mentored, and the enduring mission of SCAASI.

Rest in peace, Dr. Howard Jones. Your work, wisdom, and dedication will never be forgotten.
