Conference Theme
Violence on Black Bodies in the Diaspora
2018 Conference

About This Years Conference

Southern Conference of African American Studies, Inc., (SCAASI) will host its annual conference from February 8-10, 2018, at the Hilton Garden Inn (formerly The King Edward’s Hotel) in Jackson, Mississippi. Working in collaboration with Tougaloo College and Jackson State University, the theme of the 2018 SCAASI Conference is Violence on Black Bodies in the Diaspora.

How is violence perpetrated, justified, resisted, adapted, and survived is a

guiding question for the 2018 SCAASI Conference.

We invite papers that consider violence and ideological conflict as interrelated concepts, where black bodies serve as contestation platforms and sites for protest, economy, resistance, reconciliation and/or how black bodies have become temporary gathering spaces and contexts for defining movements and migrations in history. We are especially looking for papers that problematize the extent to which gender continues to be a site of contestation or consolidation in understanding violence or that discuss the threat of violence and indirect violence of environmental discrimination.

We also welcome papers on all topics related to the Black experience, race or race relations, and social inequality or stratification.
